Finance Count

Finance Count is a unique strategic planning tool that enables you to benchmark your charity's performance against the charities that you choose.

CFG runs Finance Count every two years, allowing you not only to assess how your performance compares to others now, but also to review your performance over time.

It is an incredibly valuable tool for finding out how charities like yours are performing, and will help you identify areas for improvement.

Finance Count is supported by Crowe Clark Whitehill and delivered in partnership with Agenda Consulting. It costs just £100 for members if you register before 30 October 2017. After 30 October, and for non-members, the cost is £250.

Register now: simply download, complete and return the registration form (Word).

Once registered, you will receive a questionnaire, focusing on the key financial management metrics  which enable organisations to pinpoint key improvement opportunities and areas of concern.

You will be able to select between 7 to 20 peer organisations against which to benchmark. And you will be able to benchmark your performance against the whole of the sector. This will give you a clear picture of your strengths and the areas for improvement. Included in the price is a programme of support from CFG to help you to identify and implement changes to become more efficient and effective and deliver greater impact.

Key topics include:

  • Transaction processing: purchasing, purchase ledger, expenses, payroll and income processing, Gift Aid, VAT recovery
  • Internal and external reporting: audit, funder reporting
  • Control and decision support: planning, budgeting cash and treasury management, financial governance and public service delivery
  • Finance function: staffing levels, qualifications, training, internal audit, effectiveness, leadership and planned changes
  • Central function costs: finance, HR, IS/IT, estate management

None of the information published is attributed to individual organisations, with the exception of agreed case studies. Peer results are anonymous, so that you can be confident that your results will not be shared - unless you choose to share them.

How does it work?

CFG works with Agenda Consulting who manage the benchmarking process online using the Agenda Consulting benchmarking database software platform.

The platform enables charities registered to enter, review and sign-off their data, choose their peers, generate and regenerate their scorecard reports against their peers, access more detailed results reports, drill down into reports to explore their results in more detail, review good practice examples from other organisations, and access contact details of participating organisations.

As a participant, you will receive:

1. An organisation scorecard

  • Tailored to the specific organisation
  • Highlights of performance on key measures
  • Compares results with 7-20 peers chosen by the charity from the list of participants
  • Good practice from other participants

2. Drill down reports to explore results in more detail

3. Sector-wide and detailed statistics reports

    1. Executive Summary
    2. Easy to read detailed statistics tables analysed by organisation size and type

    4. Online access to the benchmarking database for 18 months

    5. Telephone support for collating the data, using the tool and helping with the results

    6. Invitations to training workshops, to learn how to use the data, and potential to participate in Action Learning Sets to explore with peers ways to improve processes, ways of working and performance.
