Charity Commission consultation results advocate a greater role for umbrella bodies like CFDG

CFDG welcome the Charity Commission’s initial conclusions on its future strategy, which were released today after a period of extensive consultation. The results show that there is support for the regulator to strengthen relationships with umbrella organisations like CFDG; and the Commission has stated that over the next four years it will start to pass on to these bodies some of the responsibility for providing advice and guidance to charities.

In setting out a new approach and priorities, the Commission reiterated the importance of its role as an independent regulator and its ability to protect public trust and confidence in the sector. The Commission will also be seeking to strengthen the self-reliance of charities and their confidence to act independently by - amongst other steps - providing more tailored advice and using technology to add some personalisation and interactivity to guidance. CFDG are pleased to see the inclusion of both these points, which they stressed in their own submission.

The focus on providing clearer information and guidance will help to reduce the number of charities requiring one on one advice, and the Commission has stated that they will continue to provide individual assistance in some areas. However, many charities will still need support beyond these areas and other organisations will have to take on the mantle of providing or brokering this support.

‘The volume of responses to the Charity Commission’s consultation on its strategic review is testament to how valued the regulator is by both the sector and wider public, and we are pleased its approach echoes many of the points made in our submission.

‘As the Commission scales back there will be opportunities for umbrella bodies such as ourselves to provide guidance and support to charities. We actively welcome such a role - CFDG have already been looking at ways to up-skill charities and encourage professional volunteering and pro bono work in the sector; as well as continuing to provide support and best practice guidance. We will be working closely with the Commission to ensure that the sector continues to be supported as services are slimmed down.’
